I’ve got to the point with my own writing where I just want to write what is in me and if other people like it, great. If I feel like I want to share it, I’ll shop it around, and if no one wants to pick it up, then I’ll go the self-publishing route, but I’d really just be happy if some other people enjoyed reading my work. 🙃 The faucet metaphor is a good one, but not mine. I tend to use Stephen King’s quote about shoveling shit to describe the writing process. 😁
Yes!! I just think the most important thing is understanding your personal writing and publishing goals and having realistic expectations because so many people get discouraged and give up when their first attempt at a manuscript (or any attempt!) doesn't become an instant "success" (success in scare quotes because infinite definitions of success exist). And I completely agree with you, when even one person reads something I wrote and tells me it entertained them, that makes my whole day (week, month, year, life).
